My book review of 'The Misadventures of Frederick' by Ben Manley

by Ben Manley
Recommended age: 3+

Any new book by Emma Chichester Clark fills me with delight because I adore her illustrations, and her humour. If you haven't yet discovered the adventures of Plumdog, told in children's picture books and two graphic novels, then don't delay any longer. They are absolutely wonderful! And make perfect gifts, appealing to all ages.

But this is a story for children of 3-5 years, and anyone who might like to join them in turning the pages of this unusual and charming picture book.

This is a funny, silly and beautifully illustrated story about friendship, outdoor adventures and overcoming a fear of things that might go wrong! It also celebrates the art of writing letters.

Frederick lives in a mansion surrounded by lakes and forests. He has everything he could possibly want, and he is bored. One day, Emily sends him a note, asking him to come outside to play. He is forced to decline her kind invitation - what if he were to hurt himself? He thinks it safer to stay indoors so, as Emily continues to tempt him with adventures and activities they might share, he persists in writing politely and formally, turning her down

The story is told through the exchange of letters between the two friends, presented with the backdrop of the exciting and colourful world outdoors with Emily, and the drab, safe and static life indoors for Frederick

This is a vibrant and entertaining book which, as soon as you finish, will see you turning back to the beginning so that you can start it all over again.
