Amazing Grace Adams

A nice, cheery cover and a positive, affirmative title, but I knew nothing about the book or the author when I opened the first page. And I couldn't put it down. Read it in one sitting.

Grace has had a good life. There have been a few things that haven't gone to plan but she's had some high points. Today, though, is the day when all the plates she's been spinning look set to come crashing down.

Grace needs to get to her daughter's sixteenth birthday. She's been tasked with getting the cake and it's a particularly loaded gesture because she's using it to make amends.

But Grace is stuck in a traffic jam. Time is passing. She's weighing up what she needs to do to get to the party on time and the panic is rising. Until she calmly gets out of the car and leaves it there in the queue and starts walking.

Crossing town to get to the bakery and then to the party, Grace looks back on her life as she contends with one crazy event after another on her journey.

It's funny and sad as it's relatable as well as being ridiculous how so many things go wrong for her in this brief period of her day. And it's on trend with its handling of the impacts of the menopause, too.

Grace Adams is amazing but if her husband and daughter no longer think so, how can she remind them and put things right? I loved it!
