So many of today's problems could be resolved if we'd just listen more carefully to each other. Lots of lightbulb moments in this fascinating, inspiring and enabling read!

My review:

As a society we've forgotten how to listen. Life is busy and noisy and, though we're bombarded with information and a plethora of means of communication, how often do we really listen?

We've become scared of someone else's point of view, and of silence, the author argues. We listen selectively, even (or particularly) with loved ones, and we tune things out.

At parties we're thinking of what we can say next, rather than responding to what we've heard someone say to us. Politicians talk over each other, presenting their soundbite, not entering into a considered and thoughtful debate. We're expected to take the lead in discussions and to shape our personal narratives.

This book tells us how much we can learn, and how we can enrich our lives, by stopping and really listening, and not just hearing what is being said.

It is beautifully written, and its comments and observations are profound. For me, every page spoke wisdom about society today and the poor communication that lies at the root of it. I felt energised and inspired by all I learned here, and I hope I'm putting it into practice!
