My review:

This is a story of three determined and courageous women as we learn of their lives in wartime Europe and near-present-day London.

The central character is Amy who is recently widowed and no longer able to pursue her love of playing the piano, due to an injury. Her life is full of loss, grief and regret but her role as an archivist gives her a new purpose.

When a newly declassified file is handed to Amy, she is astonished to uncover proof that wartime heroine 'Agent Colette' existed. The name had only been whispered and the identity had never been verified.

Fifty years after the end of the war, Amy determines to find out more about this mysterious woman but her key contact, MI6 'godmother' Verity Cooper seems unwilling to share what she knows.

Little by little secrets are revealed to devastating effect.

This is wonderfully atmospheric of both periods, 1940s Europe and 1990s suburbia, with great characterisation, perfectly paced. It's a sophisticated page-turner as we eagerly seek the answers with Amy as she uncovers increasingly puzzling events.
