My review:

The author is a young woman with an ever-increasing profile as an environmentalist and activist. I loved her memoir Birdgirl where she described her family and love of birds. This time she's writing for readers aged 7 upwards.

The pages are dominated by the cheery, colourful and detailed illustrations from Lynn Scurfield with the text dotted as paragraphs between the action.

We're introduced to seven different birds and track their incredible journeys around the world. There's the arctic tern which covers the distance from the earth to the moon and back three times in its lifetime. And the swallow whose migration takes it through Europe, across the Sahara Desert and all the way to the tip of South Africa.

Extraordinary facts are interspersed with snippets of history and folklore, highlighting the relationship humans have with birds, and encouraging us to love and care for them for the future.

The book works on many different levels. The illustrations are charming and childlike on some pages, and sophisticated on others. The writing is personal and conversational yet packed with facts and detail. It's lovely to keep turning the pages, enjoying the colour and activity but it's a book to take time over to process and digest all the information Mya-Rose is sharing. A beautiful gift.
