My review:

This isn't a new book but one I was given recently and it's perfect for this time of year (Christmas 2023!). I found myself repeatedly dipping into its collection of traditional sayings and superstitions about cooking, gardening, housekeeping and health for adults and children - with its explanations of how and why they have relevance today.

If you've considered the truth of the saying 'red sky at night, shepherd's delight' or whether a dock leaf really does ease a nettle sting, why we should plant broad beans on Boxing Day or whether it's helpful to peel an onion under water, then this book is for you!

There's lots of 'traditional advice and old country ways' in this beautifully packaged and handy hardback.

Each saying is given a page, or sometimes two, with a brief explanation followed by a more detailed, or scientific, outline. There are also box out items about related subjects, so there's plenty here, presented in an accessible and attractive format.

It's a delightful little book which is a great conversation starter when shared with others!
