What's Your Dream
by Simon Squibb
My review:

I'd seen Simon Squibb on Instagram. He is an entrepreneur who, after building his fortune, now films himself walking up to strangers in the street and asking them to tell him their dream. Then he'll give them money, anything from £10 to £10,000, to take the first steps to making the dream a reality. This book gives us all tips on how we too can make our dreams come true.

The book is very much written in Simon Squibb's voice. His passion, enthusiasm and down-to-earth 'can do' attitude, evident in his Instagram posts, is very present here, and it's energising and inspiring.

Despite him saying that we should put aside all the things that are hindering us from pursuing our dream in life, it's difficult to put this book down to get on with it.

It is an entertaining and informative read, not just in the advice given, but also in learning about the author's own story and his accounts of people he's met in the street and the goals they've shared with him in what they want to achieve. He tells of how, in answering his question 'what is your dream?' people stand taller and their eyes sparkle.

Squibb claims there are four myths in life - that hard work will solve all your problems, that failure is to be feared, that difficult things have to be avoided and that possessions are what you seek. He seeks to dispel these myths and goes on to explain the obstacles we make for ourselves and how we can overcome them.

It's a great book but I found the concluding few pages the most inspiring of all. He urges us all to do what he does: to ask people to tell us their dreams. In society today it's increasingly more difficult to have random conversations with strangers, he says - even the check-out in a supermarket is a machine. And by finding out less about other people 'our lives become a little smaller and less interesting as a result'.

'In order to make your dream come true,' he says, 'you need to help someone else's dream come true.' So give help expecting nothing in return. That will liberate someone else to do the same. 'When you help someone, it changes you - it awakens a confidence that you can make a difference.' A great message and a brilliant book!
