We're all well aware that rivers are in crisis. In the UK we've been informed of the shocking behaviour of the water companies and have witnessed for ourselves the outcome of pollution and exploitation of this natural, vital resource. 

Here Macfarlane presents just how foolish we are being as a global community in not respecting, protecting and revering our rivers and waterways.

He highlights activists who are seeking to gain legal status for our rivers in order to protect them from commercial threat. He's travelled to Ecuador, India and Canada to see where rivers have been saved as well as where they are dying. And he describes the people he meets who are dedicating their lives to this cause.

It's an incredible book. I was underlining throughout and leaving asterisks and comments. There are shocking details and there are prompts for action, there are inspiring individuals and heart-rending tales of tragedy and hardship. 

Above all, though, the writing is extraordinary. It's so beautiful. Not just in his descriptions of the natural world, but his attention to detail in people and places. He's so perceptive and writes with such empathy, sensitivity, respect and intensity. 

Everyone must read this book! Don't feel intimidated by it, as I was. Just dive in, wallow in the language, and let's save our rivers.
