This is a great read for children aged nine upwards. It tells the story of two children, Jamie and July who live very different lives and are facing very challenging circumstances. They are each trying to find solutions for the very adult problems they've confronted. When they meet by chance, they are both running away from home. Their friendship might help them find some answers.

Jamie's mum has had to go away for work and she's left him with her boyfriend. She's separated from Jamie's dad and he's overseas working, she's said, so Jamie has no choice but to be with Garrett, this man he doesn't like and doesn't trust. 

July had hoped her mum had got off the drink and drugs that had caused them to be separated so many times. Though July is now living at home after being in foster care, she thinks her mum has reverted to her old habits. 

A catastrophic event causes Jamie to flee Garrett's house and try and find his aunt in Brighton, the only person he thinks can help him in his terrible situation.

July decides to go back to her foster carer in Brighton to see if she might be able to help her mum resist the pull of her old life.

The two children meet by chance at Waterloo Station as they get on a train to Brighton. Things don't go to plan for either of them, but matters are resolved wonderfully in the end.

This is such a compelling read. The children come over as engaging individuals and their problems are powerfully presented. There is a strong sense of jeopardy as they face challenges and threats in their journey and time away from home, family and safety. A great read.
