Folk

by Zoe Gilbert
A perfect choice for October, it was agreed. A very dark, unsettling and haunting collection of interlinked stories about an island community. Full of myth, mystery and folklore, some found this book incredible and couldn't contain their delight at such an unusual novel. Others appreciated the lyrical writing but struggled to engage with the characters or to connect with the themes or story.

Something a little darker for the end of October. Centred in folklore, 15 interlinked short stories tell the tale of an inward-facing society imprisoned by the sea. Benjamin Myers says: "immersive and dripping with life, each story a spell, an allegory, a dark, smoky poem". What will we think of it?
