I like reading about writers and writing and this looked a gem. The author of 'The Secret Life of Bees' here shares something of her life and her craft. So, even though I can't remember anything about that particular novel (I read it a long time ago!), I was intrigued to find out more about the author and her work and, when I received the book, I almost squealed with delight - what a beautiful cover!!

The book is described as part memoir, part philosophical musings, part advice to aspiring writers, and there's plenty to get stuck into! I found that I wanted to take it slowly, almost like a text book or a guide. I wanted to be at a desk with notebook and pen to respond at once to many of the points she raises.

I did feel I needed to be more familiar with her work to fully appreciate all that she shares. She introduces each novel, concisely explaining how they came about in terms of inspiration and research as well as some of the challenges in the actual writing process. 

It's a very honest book where the author explains how she left her job to explore her passion for writing, and some of the highs and lows that subsequently resulted. She ponders some of the great writers who have inspired her and relates her insights and observations. She highlights how writing is both 'mystery and method'.

Maya Angelou was instrumental in her writing career, she says, quoting Angelou's statement: 'There are only three things you need in order to write. First, you need something to say. Second, you need the ability to say it. Finally, you need the courage to say it all.' And this book equips the reader with the skills to address all three points! It is both practical and inspiring.
