The hardback and paperback covers for this book are very different but this image does give more of a hint towards the nature of the story - a spy thriller set in the 1960s in the Cold War. It's a fantastic read full of atmosphere and sardonic observations from a rather compliant narrator. I loved being a part of his world and am thrilled this is the first of a trilogy - I didn't want it to end! 

Gabriel Dax is a travel writer who, on one of his assignments in South America, has the opportunity to interview a leading political figure. His article is never published, though, yet its revelations come to haunt Gabriel and place him in a precarious new occupation.

He becomes embroiled in espionage, working for both his brother and an intriguing and beguiling woman called Faith Green.

Even as Gabriel endeavours to remain safe and true, he finds himself compromised and also interrogating his own past. As a child, his mother died in a house fire which Gabriel managed to escape. Memories and nightmares continue to haunt him. 

It's a fabulous book. The writing is wonderfully nostalgic, reminding me of Graham Greene...?! I was completely gripped in Gabriel's story and can't wait to read the next instalment, which is called 'The Predicament'.
