This novel is the partner to 'Gliff', Smith's novel from 2024. I haven't read it, though may well do so now. 

The two books can obviously be read independently of each other, but this story takes up a thread hidden in the first.

Petra and her little sister Patch hear about a terrible event in the past and start making up a ghost as their way of dealing with what they have heard. Their storytelling gets out of hand though, as people in the community think they have special powers.

Thirty years later Petra, now estranged from Patch, finds a phantom horse running amok in her bedroom. She knows only her sister would understand, so calls her.

Deceptively light, odd and funny, the deeper, darker themes explored in this novel take you unawares. Smith wants us to think about history, the power of the imagination, and war. She urges us to consider care, consideration, solidarity, resistance and openness as we confront and counter the challenges of our 'broken, brutal and divided time'. A great read which I need to look at again!
