Details for 'Raising Hare' by Chloe Dalton
Raising Hare

This is a memoir of a couple of years in the life of a high flying professional who, living in her country home during lockdown, discovers an abandoned baby hare.
Chloe Dalton used to take her walks each day through the fields surrounding her home. One day she finds a leveret, motionless on a track. Knowing she shouldn't interfere, she first leaves it, hoping the parent will find it and lead it back to safety. But, discovering it's still there a few hours later, she decides to take it home and nurse it back to health.
There then follows an amazing story of the author's relationship with this hare as it grows through adolescence into adulthood and having its own brood of leverets.
It's just the most wonderful book (as everyone before me has said). The author comes over as being very careful, considerate and respectful of the natural world. The hare is not her pet, but the bond between them is touching, inspiring and heartwarming.
In addition to the personal story, there are facts here about the life of a hare and its young, things of which I had had no knowledge but the information is shared in such an easy style that you lap up the details, learning effortlessly.
And the description of the author's home, an oasis from busy, urban life, makes the book a real tonic.
I loved it and am going to read it again. Sorry it's taken me so long to recommend it but if you haven't discovered it already, I hope you'll be encouraged to do so now!
