Frank meets Chrissie when he's travelling across America and she offers him a lift. He's eager to see a house he's been told about in LA, made of steel and glass but he immediately falls for Chrissie and they soon decide to make a life together.

Leaving her disapproving family behind, Chrissie moves to England with Frank and they create the steel and glass house on a hillside for their new home. Their life is complete when they have two children, Clary and Jessie. But a tragic accident changes everything.

The family's life continues on a different path from the dreams Frank and Chrissie shared, but he still ponders what might have happened if he hadn't met Chrissie. The house, too, is something he can never leave because of it being the place they built together, but what hold does it have on him and his family?

This is a fabulous read. Starting out, it reminded me of 'Lessons in Chemistry' in tone and spirit, and I didn't want to put it down. I felt it meandered a little about halfway through, where the focus changed and it was a little darker and sadder, but it was worth persevering for the conclusion. And it does make you think about the tiny decisions we make in life and the often vast outcomes. And how healthy is it to hold on to things with which we have associations, like a house? 

I enjoyed it tremendously.
