My review:

Beautifully detailed illustrations, terrifying ghosts, a boarding school, brave and fiesty girl and boy protagonists, and a story that rips along. Inspired by a visit to Salisbury, there is a marvellously vivid sense of place in this wonderful new book from the bestselling author, Cornelia Funke.

Eleven-year-old Jon Whitcroft is sent away to school when he doesn't get on with his mum's boyfriend. Immediately he arrives he has visions of violent and vengeful ghosts. His new friend, Ella helps him uncover the secrets of an ancient murder committed by Jon's ancestor and for which the victim is seeking retribution. The only way Jon can stay safe is to summon the ghost of the 12th century knight, Sir William Longspee for protection. But can he be trusted?

The illustrations and large, spacious text suggests this book is suitable for younger readers from about eight years old, but the story is quite dark, scary and violent in places, so it is more likely to appeal to much older children.
