This author is known for her retelling of the stories of the gods, bringing them into adventures for younger readers, aged eight upwards. I have to confess that I'm not interested in Greek mythology but she's a popular writer so I was intrigued to find this, her new book, bringing Shakespeare into a modern children's adventure story.

Will Davenant and his mum are in a retirement home going through the belongings of his grandfather who has recently died. Life hasn't been easy for them both and it's a sad task they're now required to do.

But Will discovers his grandfather’s copy of 'The Complete Works of Shakespeare' which is much more than a dusty collection of boring plays written by a shadowy figure in history.

It turns out that Will is the last living relative of William Shakespeare himself, and he can summon the Bard’s heroes from the pages of the book.

As life continues to present challenges to Will and his mum, these magical new friends look set to help him turn things around for the better.

This is a fabulous book - I really enjoyed it. There's humour and energy and the characterisation is great. It did feel to me, though, that Will and his new friend actually proved more resourceful than the characters from Shakespeare's plays. But I loved it!
