My book review of 'War Dog' by Tom Palmer and illustrated by Carolina Rabei

This is a beautiful picture book for children aged four years and up, based on the true story of a dog called Judy. She was made a hero of war and awarded the Dickin Medal which honours animals for bravery in service.
Judy was taken on board a ship in World War II to protect the crew from danger and distract and comfort them in the difficult times they faced. When the ship was taken by the enemy Judy went with the captured crew, ultimately becoming the only animal to be made an official prisoner of war.
It's an amazing story though a few jumps in the chronology and explanations of what happened. There are charming illustrations and the book provides a powerful tale of the incredible bond we have with animals, and their tremendous loyalty, courage and intelligence. Wonderful.
