Gail Baines is preparing for her daughter's wedding, but things aren't going to plan. First Gail loses her job, then her ex-husband Max arrives - with a homeless cat - expecting her to house them both. And then...her daughter discovers her fiance has been keeping a secret.

Gail and Max have differing views on what's best for daughter Debbie. But perhaps Debbie's decision will teach them both something about coping with the unexpected events in life. 

This is a brilliant book. I don't always like Anne Tyler's writing but I loved this. The characters were funny but believable in their attitudes and responses. It was wonderful escapist stuff with messages, too, about acceptance and independence, fulfilment and contentment. 

A slim novel of just 176 pages, it is divided into three chapters and was easy to read in an evening. A wonderful book which I picked up by chance, it was funny, with great characterisation. I loved it and will read it again.
