It's a charming tale of a man reaching the end of his life and looking back over the people he's met and the relationships he's made.

Nils Vik has spent his life ferrying people to and fro, and we join him on the last day of his life heading out onto the fjord one more time.

This day his trip is different. A lifetime of passengers join him from beyond the grave, including his dog Luna, the American photographer he thought of as his friend and young Jon Anderson, whose funeral Nils attended. But Nils is really waiting for one particular passenger: his wife Marta, whom he has mourned every day since she passed away.

The story is told with wry humour and poignancy. Ultimately it's a story of a life well lived.

It's a slim book, easy to read, and with a moving conclusion. I can see why it's proved popular.
