This is a collection of quotes by well known artists, beside a little biography about them and an explanation of their work, and then a 'thought' by the author on how to apply the artist's message to our daily creative expression.

The author is known for her book 'The Story of Art Without Men' which I haven't read, yet. Here, she uses content from interviews, personal conversations, books and talks, to share thoughts, reflections and encouragements from artists such as Marina Abramovic, Nan Goldin, Lubaina Himid, Louise Bourgeois and many more.

There are such riches here that it's a valuable discipline to read one day at a time in order to digest and ponder the information and inspiration.  

While I was away this week, I took time out from working and on the train journeys, in the shops and cafes, and passing people in the street, I was able to heed the words of artist Alice Neel (featured on 12 March). 'Whether I'm painting or not, I have this overweening interest in humanity. Even when I'm not working, I'm analysing.'

And Hessel adds: 'Living an artful life is about looking and being interested...not seeing people as a group, but noticing the minutiae of their individuality.'
