This is the memoir of a man who has made a very successful career in finance in the USA, and who has written a number of acclaimed books on the subject, including 'The Myth of Capitalism'. But he was born to American missionaries who took their young family to Madrid, to reach out to the heroin addicts and the homeless. It was the 1980s and it was when AIDS claimed many lives. This is the story of Jonathan's childhood.

The Teppers moved to Spain determined to reach the students in the city with their Christian faith, intending to start a church there. But they received very little response. Instead the father, Elliott Tepper realised that the people really needing help were those on the edges of society.

He instructed his young sons to take leaflets to the addicts, criminals and homeless on the streets, inviting them to services and teaching.

Jonathan remembers this time clearly. It was often frightening but the boys never came to harm! And some of the people they spoke to did come to hear Elliott Tepper preach.

But the Teppers realised they needed to create a drug rehabilitation centre and did so while also opening up their home to these people. Jonathan and his brothers built strong friendships with these men. And the book tells of those amazing relationships. 

It is a powerful and moving story of faith and commitment, hope and healing, but also terrible tragedy. So many of these men, who were seeking to turn their lives around, fell victim to the AIDS epidemic and the Tepper family also experienced great loss in shocking circumstances. Jonathan doesn't shy away from expressing how these events affected his own faith and approach to life. 

The rehabilitation centre was called Betel and has continued to work, helping more than 100,000 people worldwide. Jonathan and his brother both went on to achieve a great deal in their lives, in the US and UK, and return to Madrid as often as they can. It's an incredible story.
