This is the third book from author-illustrator Emma Chinnery who works as a librarian in Suffolk. I think her illustrations are wonderful, and this is an uplifting, heartwarming tale with a blended family as its backdrop to a bit of magic.

When Tina and her mum move in with Tom and his dad, the two children have an immediate bond - not least because Tom has a dragon's egg under his bed.

When it's time for the creature to hatch, Tina and Tom make her a bed from a shoebox lined with moss and leaves and feed her pieces of sausage and pizza.

She very quickly grows, and grows. The three of them start to go out on adventures together and are having lots of fun when one day Tina's mum says that she and Tina need to move out. Will Tina and Tom be able to remain friends?

It's a very lovely book. The illustrations are glorious. Take a look at Emma's first book - 'My Friend Andy' - and 'Enchanted Beach' written by Esther Freud, which Emma illustrated. They make me smile just looking at them, a perfect combination of traditional, classic illustrations in a modern setting and context.

There are big issues here in presenting blended families, moving house, dealing with change and loss, but it's sensitively handled within a story of magic, adventure and excitement. Can't wait to see what Emma produces next!
