The Wrath of the Woolington Wyrm
by Kathryn Foxlee and illustrated by Freda Chiu

I'm not much into monsters and magical creatures but this was a nostalgic, mythical tale of village life with lots of strong female characters and I rather enjoyed it!

Aimed at readers aged nine upwards, it's a fun fantasy with an olde wolde charm of rural life.

Mary-Kate has had to move to the country with her archaeologist mother. It's not something she's very happy about but she's resilient and independent and resolves to make the best of things, noting her experiences in a strawberry-scented notebook and wearing her sparkly red shoes (a popular fashion choice for female characters in books at the moment? Book group members will recall this from 'The Half Life of Valery K'!).

Mary-Kate's mother is investigating unusual bones found in a well in the village, but Mary-Kate, with her new friend, makes her own discoveries as they seek to find the source of strange noises and feel the ground trembling underfoot.

This is an enjoyable and entertaining read of myth and legend with feisty characters and a nostalgic feel.
