Filling in dates for the coming months in a pristine new diary is always a pleasure though it never fails to make me ponder. What will have happened by October? What will I have experienced in June?

How would we live our life if we knew what was in store? Would we cherish each moment or would we squander today in our desire to retire/marry/holiday in the month or year ahead?

There are some people who can't read a book without knowing the ending. 'I don't like surprises,' one person told me. 'I'm not good with suspense,' said another who turns to the conclusion of a detective story to find out whodunnit.

While much of life today is about looking ahead, we also see, through popular entertainment shows, how gratifying it is to enjoy the journey rather than being fixated on the prize.

This year I haven't set myself any goals or resolutions - my ambitions for the year were always unrealistic anyway. Instead, in 2026 I'm going to try and focus more on the here and now, enjoying the book I'm reading rather than the number still unread!

Thank you for reading.
