This week has been dominated by the release of the film of 'The Thursday Murder Club', the bestselling book by Richard Osman.
There has been endless coverage of the red carpet as the A-lister stars have been paraded in their finery and quizzed about their views on murder(!?) and the books they like to read.
While I have probably had my fill of Osman's murder mysteries now (until the next one), I was looking forward to seeing this film. It looked a light, enjoyable entertainment and I remember being amused by the antics and mannerisms of the characters in the book. So I got out my knitting and settled down to watch it.
There's very little on television which will get my undivided attention these days. I will knit, iron or cook when there's something I'd like to watch. It seems a waste of time otherwise.
And I know for many people reading is viewed in the same way - too expensive in time, they have turned to audio books so that they can take on other tasks as they listen to a story.
Perhaps I could have got through the Booker Longlist if I had accumulated the titles on audio and listened as I drove to meetings, went for a run or did the gardening.
But for me, still, reading remains the activity that warrants my undivided attention. Sometimes it's good to do one thing at a time, isn't it?
Thank you for reading.
